In September, the Xtrutech Engineering Team attended and supported a World Class Programme on Extrusion Cooking at the National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering!

Food Twin-Screw Extrusion Technology Experts

Hosted by food extrusion technology experts Dennis Forte and Dr Keith Brewood from Dennis Forte & Associates, the team completed the Food & Feed Extrusion Technology course and Design of Food Extrusion Dies course.

To support the masterclass in the design of extrusion cooking plants, Xtrutech supplied our laboratory twin-screw extruder, the XTS19, to be a backdrop to the teaching of how to use the extruders to manufacture products such as aquafeed, breakfast cereals, snack foods, and TVP. The XTS19 twin-screw extruder is a smaller laboratory extruder ideal for small batch runs and the testing of new formulations. It is perfectly suited for the processing of thermoplastics, medical plastics, biopolymers, fine chemicals, and TVP. Xtrutech are building laboratory extrusion lines in house with seamlessly integrated feeding systems, drum coolers, and ancillaries to create specialised extrusion lines.

Engineering Team Success

Xtrutech Engineering Manager Paul Latham, Mechanical Design Engineer Ryan Marklew, and Systems Integrations and Test Engineer Dan Chetwyn took the trip to Sheffield Hallam University‘s National Centre of Excellence. They were three of the worldwide delegates from countries as far as Brazil, Greece, Denmark, Norway, and Belgium.

The Food & Feed Extrusion Technology course covered the principles of extruder configurations for single and twin screw extruders. The course also looked at die types and effect in die design and extrusion chemistry in recipe design. The Design of Food Extrusion Dies was a two day course which included the calculation of die conductance. It also analysed the causes of product curvature, design of primary dies, and the influence of die wear.

We are proud to be developing extrusion equipment to support the future of food extrusion.  The knowledge gained from the course will be used to support customers with their food extrusion plants and research.
